Senegal became a Republic on November 15, 1958, and gained independence on August 20, 1960, under the leadership of President Léopold Sedar Senghor.
However, the country Celebrates its independence on April 4 following the transfer of power agreement signed between Senegal and France on the same date in 1960.
This year’s occasion, however, comes amid concerns of increased fighting between the army and the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance MDFC rebels, inflation, high rate of unemployment and poverty.
President Macky Sall in a broadcast Sunday evening promised developmental projects and massive employment opportunities for the population.
