WEEKLY TOP NEWS – TACKLING THE MENACE OF IRREGULAR MIGRATION IN WEST AFRICA
We will take off our discussion segment from irregular migration reports and dissect the issues in it.
As you heard, it has been a back and fourth claim by the government and international aids agencies on the status and situation of the over 300 migrants rescued in Morocco.
Irregular migration is not new as we know, Migrants use numerous land, sea, and air routes to reach their desired destinations in North Africa and Europe. Europe’s increasingly restrictive immigration policies and intensified migration controls have led to a growing reliance on overland routes, although migrants who can afford it make at least part of the journey to North Africa by airplane.
However, the drive by young people to migrate is becoming worrisome as Senegal for many is now the preferred route which sails from the northern region to the canary island or Morocco in most cases for onward transit.
Let’s look at this situation from all angles, including the role of the regional bloc ECOWAS and the true state of the over 200 Senegalese migrants rescued in Morocco.
My guest are: -Ogaba Ogabidu, A Migration expert based in Nigeria
-Mumuni Yakubu Nambe – Migration expert and a Final year Law student (LLB) at Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration
-Prince Bubacarr Sankanu, the Deputy Spokesperson for The Gambia Government
-Abdou Aziz Cisse – Advocacy operations assistant at AfricTivistes – here in Senegal
