The African Union (AU) has expressed deep concern over the suspension of political parties and associations in Mali by the transitional authorities, which it believes may obstruct the inclusive transition process in the country.

The AU has urged the Malian transitional authorities to reconsider their decision and work on a roadmap to complete the ongoing transition process.

The transitional authorities of Mali suspended the activities of political parties and associations on April 10, 2024, citing political and security reasons.

Minister of Territorial Administration and government spokesperson Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga, argued the suspension is seen as a necessary step towards creating the right conditions for major activities of the Transition, including the Inter-Malian Dialogue for Peace and National Reconciliation initiated by Colonel Assimi Goïta.

The duration of the transition in Mali had been set at 24 months, according to an announcement made on June 6, 2022
