US grants Sudan US$1.2bn to clear World Bank arrears

The United States has agreed to grant Sudan a 1.2Billion dollar short term loan to clear its arrears with the Word Bank.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Munchin made the announcement following his first visit to the conflict scarred country after America removed it from its list of “State sponsors of terrorism” in December 2020.

Mr Munchin met with Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok and General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan, who are both in a power-sharing deal since the oustingof Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

US Treasury Secretary Munchin via tweet, announced that hehad signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Sudan to provide a bridge loan.
