Amnesty International has described as growing crackdown, last weekend’s arrest of key opposition figures in Togo by the authorities.

It said in a statement on Wednesday that Togolese authorities have continued to arbitrarily arrest political opponents since President Faure Gnassingbé was re-elected for a fourth term in February.

The detention of Brigitte Kafui Adjamagbo-Johnson, the new coordinator of the Dynamique Monseigneur Kpodrzo (DMK), a coalition of opposition parties and civil society organizations in Togo, and Gérard Yaovi Djossou, in charge of social affairs and human rights, was extended on Tuesday.

They were arrested on November 28 and 27 respectively, after the DMK had called for a large demonstration in Lomé to denounce the results of the presidential election and the judicial harassment of opponents.
