Authorities in Sudan have made plans to extradite former president Omar al-Bashir and two others to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The ICC presented charges of genocide and various crimes against humanity that are said to have taken place during the Sudanese civil war.

This was announced in a statement made by the Sudanese Foreign Ministry.

Bashir ruled Sudan from 1989 up until 2019, when he was ousted imprisoned after being accused of stealing millions.

Afterwards, the Sudanese Anti-Corruption Commission confiscated all his assets and those of his closest companions. The sum of these assets was said to be close to $4 billion.

He is now being suspected of giving orders to violently suppress riots in the Darfur province and kill peaceful inhabitants of the Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa ethnic groups between 2003 and 2008 during the civil war.

Bashir’s attorney, Abu Bakr al-Jaali, stated that the decision to extradite the former head of state "reveals a conspiracy that has been hatched, and if the extradition step is taken, it will be a disaster for Sudan."

This is not the former president’s first encounter with the Court, as they previously issued two warrants for his arrest. One in 2009 and the other in 2010, as government forces were alleged to have been involved in genocide and crimes against humanity
