Senegal’s Presidency has denied reports suggesting that a Delegation of the European Union, EU has requested for the postponement of the legislative elections of 31 July.

In a press release, the President’s Communication Department described the reports as false information.

Reports that the EU had requested a postponement of the legislative elections after the Opposition coalition, Yewwi Askan Wi set June 29 for fresh demonstrations to be held despite the ban on the previous one.

Tensions have been growing since Senegal's highest court on June 3 upheld a decision to disqualify the national candidate list on a technicality.

Last week, police prevented Ousmane Sonko, who came third in the last presidential election from leaving his home to demonstrate, while four other opposition figures were arrested.
