The Nigerian Air Force conducted airstrikes on encampments that housed members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its paramilitary arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
According to Gabriel Gabkwet, the Air Force spokesman, in a statement released on Wednesday, multiple strikes were executed on Tuesday at separate locations in two eastern states.
Gabkwet specified the targeted areas as Mother Valley Orsumughu in the Nnewi South Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State and Aku Ihube in the Okigwe LGA of Imo State. Ahead of the operation, Gabkwet noted that the military had received intelligence about the planned disruption of civic activities across the South-East by these terrorist groups.
As discussions about the impact of the airstrike operation on IPOB’s separatist ambitions intensify among the public, regional experts are expressing concerns about the potential repercussions on innocent citizens.
