The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned on Monday that the humanitarian situation has deteriorated sharply in south-western Niger.

It says more than 10,000 people are currently displaced in the department of Ouallam, on the border with Mali and only about 80 kilometres north of the capital Niamey.

The mass displacement of people occurred on 2 January after jihadists killed around 100 people in attacks on the villages of Tchamo Bangou and Zaroumadareye.

Several others were injured and the livelihoods of these communities were destroyed.

Atiewin Mbillah-Lawson reports.
