The Nigerien ruling CNSP has signed a decree to revoke the nation’s 2015 law criminalizing migrant smuggling.

The Nigerien Minister of the Interior in a media interview revealed that his principal General Abdourahamane Tiani, signed the decree on Monday.

The executive decision followed a growing tension between Niamey and the European Union (EU) which had reportedly encouraged authorities eight years ago to pass this law to keep migrants from its shores.
