The Fund’s Representative Aboubacry Tall says, of the 2.2 million people in need nutritional assistance, 1.6 million are children under 5 years old. More specifically, some 450,000 Nigerien children suffer from severe acute malnutrition.

UNICEF further recalls that Niger is often faced with food shortages and malnutrition, worsened by the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The UNICEF representative in Niger, however, specified that the Niamey authorities and humanitarian partners are engaged on the ground to best manage this humanitarian emergency.
