Liberia: Cleric urges intervention in escalating land disputes

Liberian Grand Motif — Sheik Abubakar Sumaworo has called on the President George Weah led government to address the growing wave of land conflict in the country.

In recent times, clashes have ensued among residents in rural areas of Liberia over land disputes.

Speaking on the occasion of the Eid-il Fitr celebration, Thursday, the Grand Motif, said if nothing is done to address the matter, the country could degenerate into a serious crisis.

Meanwhile, President George Weah, has constituted a special presidential committee to mediate on lingering land disputes in Nimba County in order to find an amicable solution.

The Nimba County Conflict Resolution Committee, as named by the President, is charged with the responsibility to, amongst other things, fully investigate reported land dispute in the County, particularly in the capital Ganta, establish the root causes of the recent violence in the county, and make recommendations.

The committee is expected to report to the President in 60 days.
