Tension is escalating between the government and the US embassy in Conakry. The issue at hand relates to the American embassy’s publication of a countdown for a return to constitutional order in the country.

According to reports, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Morissanda Kouyaté, has expressed his anger, stating that Guinea is a sovereign country, and the issue of the return to constitutional order is already scheduled.

The countdown, titled “On the road to democracy,” has divided different actors in Guinea, with the Guinean civil forum supporting the move, while the Guinean authorities have found it unacceptable.

The political turmoil in Guinea began in September 2021 when President Alpha Conde was removed from power through a military coup. Since then, the military has been in charge of the country, and there have been calls for a return to civilian rule.

Experts suggest that the American embassy’s countdown could be seen as an attempt to pressure the military to adhere to the transition timetable and return the country to constitutional rule. However, the Guinean authorities view it as an intrusion into their sovereignty and an attempt to interfere in their internal affairs.
