A Guinean court has sentenced two members of the National Front for the defense of the constitution FNDC to one year in prison. The opposition members were Wednesday charged with inciting insurrection against the re-election of President Alpha Conde in the country’s October polls.
Police arrested Souleymane Conde and Dioubate in September, during rising political tensions in the run-up to the elections.
Roger Bamba, one among those arrested alongside his comrades, died in pre-trial detention.
Guinea’s government has said Bamba died after an illness, but his family insists he was poisoned and has accused the government of committing a state crime.
Dr. Faya Millimono, a leader of the liberal bloc, expressed displeasure over the court’s ruling as many hope for reconciliation in Guinea’s Political scene following Conde’s inauguration.
