The management of Ghana's Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology KNUST, has issued a public alert to the university community concerning the “astronomical upsurge” of COVID-19 cases in the institution.

The alert was addressed to College Registrars, urging them to ensure strict compliance with all COVID-19 protocols.

The Ashanti region, where the University is located, is also experiencing a surge in positive cases, with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KAMA) attributing the rise in cases to the disregard of COVID-19 preventative protocols and social gatherings. They also confirmed that over 200 positive cases resulting in 10 mortalities were reported between the 1st and 13th of July, within the Metropolis.

Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo has said the rising number of active COVID-19 cases shows that citizens have let their guard down.

The President was addressing Muslims at the Eid-ul-Adha celebration at the National Central Mosque in Accra.
