Ghana’s former president and flag bearer for the largest opposition political party, the National Democratic Congress has reignited the debate on whether or not to legalize motorcycle taxis, popularly known as Okada, in the country. During a campaign visit to the country’s Volta region, John Mahama promised to legalize the trade which he says has created more jobs than other government’s job initiatives. But the governing New Patriotic Party has dismissed the promise, referring to it as populist. Meanwhile, the Okada Association has welcomed the move, throwing their weight behind the former president for the December 7 Presidential election. WADR’s Atiewin Mbillah-Lawson reports from Accra.
