Ghana where the presidency has appointed COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare as Ag. Inspector General of Police (IGP) with effect from August 1. He is set to take over from James Oppong-Boanuh, who was appointed by President Akufo-Addo in October 2019.

The now former IGP, James Oppong-Boanuh’s leadership was met with criticism, with some stating that he was incompetent to run the police service.

COP Dr. Dampare, was a high contender for the position, and has been in the police service for over 30 years. Before his appointment, he served as the Director General in charge of Administration at the Service. He has also been credited for his prominent role in the swift arrest of the alleged killer of former Member of Parliament J.B Danquah.

His appointment makes him the youngest Acting IGP to be appointed in the Fourth Republic, and the eighth youngest since Ghana gained independence.
