Ghana’s Constitution Review Committee has proposed extending the presidential term from four to five years, emphasizing that the move is aimed at improving governance efficiency and does not allow a third term.
The report, presented to President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, December 22, also recommends reforms in local governance, including the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives and formal inclusion of traditional authorities in local government structures.
Additionally, the Committee proposes establishing a dedicated anti-corruption commission to consolidate prosecutorial functions currently spread across multiple agencies, while the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice would refocus on human rights protection and ombudsman duties.
President Mahama welcomed the recommendations and announced plans to establish a Constitutional Review Implementation Committee next year to study the proposals and guide steps toward possible amendments to the 1992 Constitution.
