A former Liberia rebel commander – Kunti Kamara popularly known as Kunti K, who is standing trial in Paris – France for alleged crimes committed during the country’s first civil war has been sentenced to life Imprisonment.
The Paris Criminal Court while delivering its judgment found the accused guilty of complicity in crimes against humanity, and responsibility as a direct perpetrator for torture and “barbaric acts”
Rights groups including Amnesty International France, International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), and Human Rights Watch said Thursday that the trial is a milestone in delivering justice for victims, of Liberia’s civil war.
Kunti K. is a former member of the rebel group United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy (ULIMO), active during Liberia’s first civil war.
Both the prosecution and defense have 10 days to appeal the decision.
