An avian influenza has been declared in the department of Bassam. The infection of highly pathogenic avian influenza type H5N1, a strain of avian influenza, was declared in the locality of Mondoukou, in the Department of Grand-Bassam, 40 km south-east of Abidjan, according to a report.
An order, signed by the prefect of the department of Grand-Bassam, Nassou Sidibé, ordered the slaughter of all the poultry present in the area, the destruction of poultry corpses and the production of farms.
The prefect also recommended the destruction of all material and waste likely to be contaminated, such as poultry feed, as well as the prohibition of movements of poultry, products and their derivatives.
Until further notice, all markets and gathering places for live poultry have been ordered shut and activities related to the processing, transport, distribution and marketing of poultry, products and by-products have been brought to a halt.
