In Cameroon, President Paul Biya has announced a series of measures to resolve the three week strike by teachers which has disrupted the education sector. A statement from the Secretary General of the Presidency said Paul Biya has ordered for three actions; Firstly, at the financial level, Paul Biya ordered the payment of the monthly salary to teachers from the month of March. It should be recalled that he striking teachers only received two-thirds of their salary previously.
President Biya also instructed the extension of the non-housing bonus to elders who do not receive it, staggered from June 2022. On the administrative level, the Cameroonian Head of State is putting in place measures to ensure integration files are ready before teachers complete their training course to decongest and accelerate the recruitment into the public service.
The letter from the Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic did not quantify the cost of these various measures, but a previous correspondence from the same signatory a few days ago already indicated 2.5 billion CFA francs would be released to meet the concerns of the strikers.
