The Niger-Benin oil pipeline was attacked on Sunday by rebels opposing Niger’s transitional government in Niamey.
The assault, claimed by the Patriotic Movement for Liberty and Justice (MPLJ), threatens Niger’s oil revenues and raises the risk of fuel shortages.
The MPLJ, composed of members from the Toubou community, openly challenges the military government led by General Abdourahamane Tiani.
Stretching nearly 2,000 kilometers, the pipeline links the Agadem oil fields in northeastern Niger to the Sèmè-Kpodji maritime terminal in southern Benin, making it Africa’s largest oil pipeline.
