The World Health organization WHO says COVID-19 vaccine shipments to Africa are rapidly ramping up from multiple sources after a near-halt to deliveries in recent months.

The global health body adds that nearly 4 million doses from the COVAX facility arrived in Africa last week, compared with just 245 000 doses from the facility throughout the month of June.

While COVAX aims to ship 520 million doses to Africa by the end of 2021, so far, almost 79 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have arrived in Africa and 21 million people, or 1.6% of Africa’s population fully vaccinated.

Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO’s Regional Director for Africa during a virtual briefing Thursday, urged African countries to gear up and get ready to end pandemic by improving vaccination plans.

She also expressed concern over the surge in cases.
