Twelve Nigerien soldiers were killed in an ambush by suspected jihadists in a counter-operation in the Tillabéri region, on Sunday 20 August, 2023.

The intervention took place in the southwest of the country, an area known to be occupied by Sahelian jihadists affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.
