International Albinism Awareness Day, IAAD, is marked annually on June 13 to raise awareness about the condition and to stop the brutalities against people with albinism. The day also illuminates the challenges faced by those with albinism and promotes their rights and well-being.

2024 marks a decade since the launch of International Albinism Awareness Day! To mark this occasion, this year’s theme is “10 years of IAAD: A decade of collective progress”.

This theme celebrates the strides made by different albinism groups from around the world; their tireless efforts for continued legal, policy and practical changes to ensure the full and equal enjoyment of rights by persons with albinism.

Albinism is a rare genetic condition caused by mutations of certain genes that affect the amount of melanin your body produces. Melanin controls pigmentation, which is the color of your skin, eyes and hair. People with albinism have extremely pale skin, eyes and hair.

They are also at an increased risk of vision, skin and social issues.
