For the first part of the program, we will be discussing Schizophrenia, a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally.
This condition involves a range of problems with thinking, behavior, and emotions. Signs and symptoms may vary but usually involve delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech, and reflect an impaired ability to function.
According to the World Health Organization, most countries in Africa, if they have a dedicated budget for mental health care, devote an average of less than 1 percent of their health spending to the problem, compared with 6 to 12 percent in the wealthy countries of the West.
In Nigeria, with a prevalence rate of 0.4%, the population estimated to be living with schizophrenia is about 1.86 million people and the national cost of schizophrenia is estimated as $609 million.
