Since the start of this month, West Africa Democracy Radio joined the global effort to raise awareness of breast cancer and other cancers in women.

This is evident in previous editions of the show, which brought you discussions on the different areas of the disease, including early identification signs and symptoms associated and the need for awareness.

In continuation, this edition will look at Innovations and accelerating women’s health progress.

West Africa is plagued by many epidemics — from Cancer, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS to malaria and wild polio — but the continent has also worked for decades to fight these threats.

The key to beating these deadly diseases is turning inward to existing expertise and finding locally driven solutions, through science innovations.

From the 8th to 11th October 2023, the Senegalese capital of Dakar on the platform of the Grand Challenge meeting, hosted thousands of health experts, including scientists, health innovators and advocates, as well as technical and donors. These experts had one goal, to improve the health systems.

This saw the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation pledging $40 million in investment to assist multiple African manufacturers in producing messenger RNA vaccines on the continent. This initiative aims to address the disparity in vaccine distribution.
