The UN Security Council is concerned about the escalation of intercommunal violence in West Africa and the Sahel.
In an official statement released during the weekend, the Council emphasized the rise of tensions and conflicts between farmers and herders in the central Sahel region.
It also commended the efforts of civil society, religious and, community leaders to resolve conflict in the Sahel, stressing the importance of equal, and safe participation of women and youth in all stages of conflict prevention, conflict resolution and, peacebuilding processes.
Additionally, the UN Security Council recognized the adverse impact of climate change, and natural disasters, including floods, drought, desertification, and land degradation, as well as how they exacerbate food security and other humanitarian, social, and economic challenges, which impact the security and stability of West Africa and the Sahel region.
