Two national police officers at the Tamou police station in the department of Say, Tillabéri region of Niger Republic were killed on Monday following an early morning attack.
The officers had just arrived at the station where they took up duty a few minutes earlier before they were attacked by gun men who according to local authorities, came on foot.
A detachment of the Rapid Action Group for Surveillance and Intervention in the Sahel (GARSI) was immediately sent to the location but before their arrival, the attackers had fled.
Experts are worried about the return of attacks in the Tillaberi region.
Last Saturday, an attack by unidentified armed men claimed the lives of 12 people just as the attackers also set fire to 3 trucks in the same region.
On Sunday October 23, at least two elements of the national guard were killed by assailants, not yet identified.
Despite the strong presence of military forces, and the state of emergency established since 2007, the region of Tillabéri located in the zone known as the three (3) borders (Burkina-Mali-Niger) has been threatened for several years by deadly attacks.
