The Togolese presidency late Monday announced the enactment of the new constitution, passed last April by the National Assembly.

Despite being contested by the opposition and civil society, the new constitution ushers Togo into the 5th Republic.

The new text moves the country from a presidential to a parliamentary system.

From now on, the National Assembly will elect the President of the Republic, for a 4-year term. The Head of State will have an honorary title.

The President of the Council of Ministers, drawn from the ranks of the parliamentary majority, will have full powers.

The new constitution was promulgated following the ruling party’s sweeping victory in the parliamentary elections a week ago.

According to the results of the electoral commission, it won over 95% of the seats in the national assembly
