The Minister of Justice of Togo, Mipamb Nahm-Tchougli, recently sounded the alarm on the critical state of Togolese prisons, marked by overcrowding and obsolete infrastructure.

During a visit to the Dapaong civil prison, he stressed that the conditions of detention do not respect international human rights standards, leading to serious consequences for the health of detainees.

Mipamb Nahm-Tchougli has since called for a complete overhaul of the prison system, pointing out the absence of a clear legislative framework to govern the management of prisons. He also noted the need to close some remand centers to improve security.

Meanwhile, some Civil Society Organisations are proposing solutions, including the introduction of alternative sentences as a measure to restore this situation and reduce the prison population while promoting the social integration of offenders.
