ECOWAS, the African Union and the International Organisation la Francophonie (OIF) yesterday expressed their satisfaction at the holding of legislative and regional elections on Monday.

The three international organizations welcomed the establishment of a permanent consultation framework. They also noted that the electoral campaign went smoothly.

The Togolese people were called to the polls on Monday to elect their deputies and regional councillors, following the adoption of a new constitution on April 19, which shifted the country from a presidential to a parliamentary system.

The Togolese opposition, which denounces the new text, sees it as a way for the current head of state, Faure Gnassingbé, to stay in power.

The results have still not been made public.

According to the Togolese electoral code, they must be announced within six days of the vote.
