We start with the big question – How many African female artists have won the Grammy awards?
The Grammy Awards, often referred to as the Grammys, are awards presented by the Recording Academy of the United States to recognize outstanding achievements in the Global Music industry.
Originally called the Gramophone Awards, as the trophy depicts a gilded gramophone, they are regarded by many as the most prestigious and significant awards in the entertainment industry worldwide.
In the last half-century, hundreds of artists have been nominated but only a few won the trophy in the different categories that they belonged to.
Interestingly, on the continent, West African female artists have the most wins for their outstanding performance, thanks to the gatekeeper, South Africa’s Mariam Makeba who won her first Grammy in the 1960s.
