Zero traffic and deserted streets, dark fumes and tear gas better describe Dakar and its environs Thursday after violent clashes between demonstrators and security operatives.

Although anticipated, the level of carnage as seen in images and videos circulated on social media is beyond any measure.

The protests followed the verdict handed down to opposition leader – Ousmane Sonko for corrupting youth which replaces the principal offence he was been accused of.
