In Senegal, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has unveiled a groundbreaking program to replace colonial-era street names with those of national heroes and historically significant events.
Announced during a cabinet meeting, the initiative aims to rewrite Senegal’s history in public spaces, fostering national identity and celebrating the country’s rich cultural heritage. President Faye emphasized the importance of educating young people about their history and honoring influential figures and milestones.
A collaborative effort between the Prime Minister, local authorities, and the Ministers of Culture and Local Government, the program will also update school textbooks and establish a National Council for Memory and Historical Heritage Management.
Beyond renaming streets, the initiative is expected to strengthen cultural pride, attract tourists, and support the growth of Senegal’s cultural and creative industries.
