Activist Bah Diakhate was arrested Monday by the Criminal Investigation Division for insulting the Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
His arrest follows remarks he made that were considered outrageous towards Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, regarding a question on homosexuality.
These statements, broadcast in a video that went viral, prompted the public prosecutor to take up the matter and order a DIC investigation.
It will be recalled that last Thursday, Prime Minister Sonko warned that the insistence on LGBTQ rights in diplomatic relations and from multinational organisations could lead to “anti-Western sentiment.”
Homosexuality is stigmatised in Senegal, where a law against “acts against nature with an individual of the same sex” carries a penalty of up to five years imprisonment.
