Some media practitioners on the African continent have expressed concern over increasing self-censorship within their respective media spaces.
They warn the development could pose a risk if not addressed. Between January 2023 and May 2024, fourteen African journalists have been killed whilst discharging their core mandate of reporting. 67 others are currently languishing behind bars in prisons.
The Africa Editors Forum disclosed the statistics at the ongoing Africa Media convention.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the African Media Convention currently ongoing in Ghana’s capital, Accra, the media practitioners called for an empowered media that will expose corrupt practices and champion Africa’s climate story.
