The Sokoto State Government in Northwestern Nigeria has declared a state of emergency to quell tensions arising from the gruesome murder of Deborah Samuel, a student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education.

Last week, a video showing the lynching and burning of the student by colleagues after she was accused of blasphemy went viral, causing global outcry.

The arrest of the suspects involved also resulted in demonstrations by hundreds of Muslims who demanded their immediate release.

Fatimah Ibrahim has the rest of the story.
