The Federal Republic of Nigeria, as the country today, celebrates 2024 Democracy Day, despite variety of issues affecting the citizens.
On June 12, 1993, exactly 31 years ago, some 14 million Nigerians went to the polls to elect a new president to end a decade of military dictatorship.
Delivering his Democracy Day speech, President Bola Tinubu pledged to implement democracy as Nigerians’ way of life.
The Nigerian president also hailed the winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, the most significant symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, his wife, Kudirat, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and Pa Alfred Rewane, among others who sacrificed their very lives.
While he acknowledged the economic hardships in the country and expressed his commitment to supporting the citizens, Tinubu urged Nigerians to beware of elements who might want to undermine the current democratic dispensation.
