Niger: Seven election officials killed in landmine blast

Seven members of the electoral commission in Niger have been killed in a landmine explosion.

According to reports, the team's car drove over an explosive device in the Tillaberi region, located in the south-west of the country.

While it is not known whether the vehicle was deliberately targeted or not, Nigeriens were voting on Sunday in the second round of the presidential election that will see the first democratic transition of power since independence from France in 1960.

Counting is underway to determine who between the governing party’s candidate Mohamed Bazoum and his rival former president, Mahamane Ousmane will get the nod.
