Over 18,000 individuals residing on islands in the western Tillabéri region’s tri-border area have commenced returning home.
This follows their displacement due to recent violence, which was partly triggered by conflicts between different communities.
According to reports, the violence was sparked by suspected jihadist groups, who were responsible for the assassination of several villagers and also engaged in the theft of cattle and demanded taxes.
The affected areas were primarily concentrated in the Dessa, Kandadji, and Ayorou communes.
