The Nigerien military has launched an operation to track down and destroy jihadists who killed over fifty civilians in the Tillaberi region along the border with Mali and Burkina Faso.
The killings took place in two villages which were raided by the militants over the weekend.
The weekend’s killings took place less than two weeks after seven soldiers were killed in the West, where the Islamic State in the greater Sahara (EIGS) is regularly rife.
Earlier on December 12 thirty-four people had been massacred in the village of Toumour, in the south-east, an attack claimed by Boko Haram.
Journalist Alou Mamani in Niamey tells WADR more about the weekend’s massacre.
