The Media Foundation for West Africa MFWA has petitioned Ghana’s Attorney General to intervene in the alleged abuse and unlawful detention of journalist Noah Dameh.
Dameh works with an Accra-based community radio station, Radio Ada.
The deputy station coordinator has been charged with publishing false news on Facebook alleging that a resident who participated in a protest against a controversial salt mining concession has been abused by the police at the request of the mining concession owner.
According to the foundation, the police should stop harassing Dameh for a public-interest Facebook post while asserting that the journalist should not be detained and subjected to criminal investigations in a jurisdiction where defamation is not a criminal offense.
WADR’s Atiewin Mbillah-Lawson has been speaking to the Program Manager for the Media Foundation for West Africa Muheeb Saeed.
