Malian filmmaker Souleymane Cissé passed away on Wednesday in Bamako at the age of 84.
Cissé, a pioneer of Malian cinema, won global acclaim with his 1987 film Yeelen, which earned the Jury Prize at Cannes. In 2023, he received the Golden Coach award at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.
His passing comes just days before FESPACO in Ouagadougou, where he was set to serve as a jury member.
