Mali is mourning the death of its former President Amadou Toumani Toure.
The former leader died in Turkey where he had been for medical treatment.
Toure led a military coup in 1991 against military ruler Moussa Traore who had been accused of repressing antigovernment protests.
Toure organized elections the following year and handed over power to a civilian president.
His death comes months after Mali experienced yet another military coup against President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
So who was Toure and what would he be remembered for in Mali’s political history?
