The highly anticipated return of Sheikh Imam Mahmoud Dicko to Mali has been postponed following an unexpected military deployment on his scheduled arrival date, February 14, 2025. The Imam Mahmoud Dicko Support Commission cited concerns over potential confrontations with security forces, prompting the delay.
According to the commission, the security deployment suggests an attempt to suppress what authorities perceive as a politically sensitive homecoming. Imam Dicko, a vocal critic of the military-led transition, has been in exile amid increasing political tensions in Mali.
This is not the first time his movement has faced pushback. The Coordinating Movement of Imam Mahmoud Dicko’s Support (CMAS) previously postponed a planned march advocating for a civilian transition in October 2023. However, instead of easing tensions, CMAS was dissolved, and its coordinator, Youssouf Daba Diawara, was imprisoned.
The postponement raises further questions about Mali’s political climate and the government’s stance on dissent. Supporters of Imam Dicko continue to call for his safe return and a more inclusive transition process.
