The Kidal town in the northern part of the country over the weekend hosted a peace and cohesion rally.

The event, organized by the Higher Council of the Imghad and allies, saw the participation of Colonel Ismaël Wagué, the Minister for National Reconciliation. The Malian government now aims to leverage the support of the Imghad community to establish authority in the region, which was reclaimed by the army last November.

The gathering centered on the theme of “Social cohesion, inter-Malian dialogue, and support for the transitional authorities.” Issouf Ag Mohamed, President of the Imghad and Allied Higher Council highlighted that it was a collaborative effort between the Imghad communities of the Kidal region and transitional authorities, with the primary goal of reinstating peace and social unity.

Despite its intentions, the Kidal meeting has been perceived as provocative by former rebels of the Permanent Strategic Framework, who were displaced from the northern Mali town.
