The International Criminal Court (ICC) has sentenced Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud to 10 years in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Timbuktu between April 2012 and January 2013.
Presiding Judge Kimberly Prost confirmed that Al Hassan will serve six more years in ICC detention, as his time already spent in custody in The Hague will be deducted from the total sentence.
The crimes include persecution, forced marriage, and destruction of cultural heritage during the occupation of Timbuktu by armed groups. This judgment highlights the ICC’s commitment to addressing grave human rights violations in conflict zones.
