The practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) is said to be pervasive in central Liberia—Bong County, where babies as young as two years old are subjected to the cut as part of initiation into a secret society called the Sandy Society.
However, international partners are said to have made a breakthrough as traditional leaders in the region have for the first time agreed to suspend the practice.
