ECOWAS is stepping in to mediate the ongoing political crisis within Liberia’s House of Representatives, as Parliament Speaker, Rt. Hon. Hadja Memounatou Ibrahima, expressed serious concerns over the impasse, warning that it could destabilize the region.

In two separate letters to Speaker Fonati Koffa and Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah, Speaker Ibrahima stressed the fragile political situation in West Africa. She noted that recent coups in neighboring countries have worsened the climate. In light of this, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, has directed ECOWAS Parliament to intervene and help resolve the crisis.

In response, Speaker Ibrahima confirmed that a five-member ECOWAS delegation will travel to Monrovia on November 11 to initiate mediation efforts. The delegation, which includes two Deputy Speakers and two Representatives, is tasked with addressing the root causes of the political deadlock and encouraging dialogue among the key stakeholders involved.

The ECOWAS mission will focus on gathering detailed information about the causes and implications of the impasse, with the goal of presenting recommendations to both the ECOWAS Authority and the Liberian government to restore stability and ensure democratic processes.

The Speaker has called for cooperation from Liberia’s leadership to enable a thorough and constructive dialogue facilitated by ECOWAS.
